Development Team Report
Report #1 — December, 28, 2006

Hello All,

Our season has started and moved into full gear.   It looked sketchy at first, but the cold and weather cooperated and we have been able to ski and train in full stride.  In fact, Bogus has been great granting us hill space allowing us to train gates.  It is very rare to be able to do that this early.

The focus in the kid’s skiing has been on balance, proper technique, learning to get the skis on edge and curve their turns through the fall line.  We have also been skiing fast to get the kids used to turning at moderate speeds.  We have been doing this through a lot of free skiing and numerous drills.  The kids do get bored with the drills, but realize the importance of such, especially after showing them world cup athletes performing the same drills.

The first portion of Christmas camp went fantastic, the kids were enthusiastic, worked hard, and the weather cooperated.  Each morning we were able to stick in gates and work on GS and SL progression drills.  In the afternoons we free skied again working on numerous drills, but also went out and had fun.

Day one we skied GS turn shape drills on upper Alpine a bit short and flat, but it allowed the kids to curve their complete turn, a must as everyone must learn how to curve on the flats before they’re able to do so on the steeps.

Day two we were able to ski GS, and GS drills on the ridge, we stepped up the difficulty and the kids responded.  The snow was very hard and icy, most likely some of the hardest they will see this year—perfect.

Day three and four we switched to SL with brushes and stubbies on the ridge in the AM and free skiing in the afternoon.  The kids moved right in and attacked the stubbies, all with smiles on their faces.  It seems there is nothing better then SL stubbies.  The second day of SL stubbies  were meet with ruts after the new overnight snow throwing the kids around, again another great training experience.  I always tell the kids it’s important to train like they race so on race day they are confident and comfortable.

I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas and are looking forward to the second half of the Christmas camp. The focus will be to continue on the same with progression towards complete SL and GS courses. With courses we will always work on technique, but also spend a lot of time on timing, line and tactics.  The first two days of the camp will be SL mostly in stubbies, with some exposure to full gates working on cross blocking drills.  If able I want to run a duel SL in stubbies on the 28th so come out and cheer on your kids to kick up the excitement and get them attacking the course.  The final three days we will work on GS with hopefully timed GS race runs on the final day.

Finally, remember to keep those skis in as good of shape as possible.  Sharpen the edges and wax those bases.

See everyone on the hill

Happy Holidays
