Freestyle Varsity Report #6
January 26, 2006

Hello all freestylers,

I trust everyone had a good week and is getting anxious for yet another stellar week at Bogus! This year has been so exciting with the outstanding snow conditions, the cooperation of the mountain in helping us prepare our sites and most of all...our team.

We (the BBSRA freestyle coaches) have seen significant improvements with all of the athletes already this season and are anxious to witness the continued progression throughout the remainder of the season!

Parents are welcome to come by the courses at any time to watch their athletes ski. It is exciting! Make sure that you introduce yourselves so we get to know the parents as well.

Chad and I were up on Tues. helping constuct the aerial site and we are making headway but we still need help! If any of you are available to help this weekend, we sure would appreciate it. I know all of you value your free time but our sites are very labor intensive and all the extra hands we can get are appreciated. If you are willing to help out, please stop by and talk to Chad or myself in the a.m.

Along those same lines, the younger programs will not be asked to help with the courses this week but the Devo and Varsity teams will. This may appear as "child labor" but they are learning as they help. Not only does it help prepare the sites, but the athletes learn about work ethic, about course preparation and site management. When I coached Steve Omischl on the Ontario team we had to construct our own aerial site from scratch. Because of lack of resources and aerialists, he and I were the only ones building it each winter but it was essential in order for him get jumping experience. Now he is going to be participating in his second Olympics, has a great chance of winning as he is the only male on World Cup competing two-quint twisting triples. Not only that but he is one of the jump shapers on the World Cup circuit. My point being, even though it appears as though they are not training, they are!!

Little Bashers will continue to work on edge control and pole planting and spend some time in the terrain park!

Mogul Mights are also going to have some time in the terrain park and more focus on improving their basic ski skills. Most everyone's edging is pretty good but we need to continue working drills to improve their basic body position. Very exciting to see most of them catching air in the moguls, great job!

Devo and varsity teams will be helping at the aerial site and working on top to bottom runs to prepare for our upcoming competition. If you are unable to ski a top to bottom run, you better start running during the week to improve your conditioning. Varsity, we will work some mental training techniques as well so make sure you all get some time with me at the top of the course.

See you all Saturday!
Melanie
