Freeride Team Report #2
February 18, 2008

Hi all,
We're now 2/3 or so through this season and it still seems like we just got started.  Hard to believe it goes by so fast, but we've been pretty lucky with snow this year.

Powder seems to have been the most training we've had this year.  I hope all the kids have enjoyed the time trying to figure out the deep stuff.

As I discussed earlier in the year, balance and position on the skis still is the primary focus we keep working on.  Hands up, knees pushing forward, head up, and trying to ski in the fall line, rather than traversing across the hill has been something we continue to work on with both groups.

Another thing you may hear is we've been trying to push "out of the box" when the snow's soft.  Challenging one another to push out of their comfort zone a bit whether it's more speed, a better fall line, making turns on a steep slope (rather than side slipping it), big air, or a new trick.  Everyone has had a crash or two, but they're finding out how to challenge those limits which is important for improvement.

Last weekend the snow conditions dictated a different path...we spent more time on the groomers where turns are a bit easier.  Focus was short radius (mogul style) turns and controlling speed.   We worked on the groomers, then moved it to some moguls.  Same focus as everywhere else with hand position forward pressuring front of the skis, head up, and skiing the fall line.

I think we've seen a fair amount of improvement in the confidence level of everyone thus far in the season.   Skills have been improving as well.

Finally, I'd like to get our group of skiers to take part in the end of the season 3-way competition.  That includes running slalom gates, GS gates, and the distance jump.  Several in our group are doing both anyway, but for those who are not, I'd like to hear whether or not you'd be interested in taking part.

Thank you,

Barry
