Varsity Report
Report #1. January 12, 2005 - Willy
Johnson
BBSRA’s
Varsity team has started the New Year at full throttle. This 16
member team works all year for a chance to race in the winter
months. There are nine racers that are JIIIs or 13-14 years old,
they race USSA races in the Intermountain division. The
seven other members are all over 15 years old, so they race FIS
and USSA races all over the west.
On Wednesday, Uros and five of the FIS athletes will
be returning from a successful race series in Canada. Kate Stoddard, Brianna
Bambic, Emily Amsden, and Kristen Stover represented the women, not only for
BBSRA but for all of The United States because our girls were the only Americans
in the field. Mike McLeod was the only boy to make the trip. He didn’t
let that distract him; he started punching it and scored a couple of results
for himself.
Will Stewart didn’t go to Canada; instead he focused on his training and school. Will is going to Snowbird this weekend to compete in a USSA race, we’ll see if that extra training paid off. It would be this coaches’ guess, that Will kicks a little butt down in Utah, but we’ll
have to wait and see about that.
The rest of the team, which consists of JIIIs were home this past weekend working
on their skills in SL and GS. Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, WY will be hosting
the JIIIs first race Jan. 22-23, 2005. There are nine JIIIs on the team and all
of them are skiing fast right now. These racers have been working hard all summer,
fall and they have continued to do so into the winter. We’ll
see how they stack up at the first race.
Monday, Willy and five of the FIS racers will
be leaving for Big Sky Montana for a couple of Downhill’s and Super Gs.
Kate is looking for a podium finish again this year after a bronze medal last year. The rest of our crew is going up to get some valuable experience in speed events, in the first FIS speed events of their carreers. It is always an adventurous week. Stay tuned.
Hope to see all of you out on the hill, or in our new office.
