Alpine Varsity Team Report
Report #3, January, 27, 2005 - Uros Pavlovcic

I spent most of my time training with J3 since I returned from Nakiska, Canada. We had good slalom practice on the back side of Bogus Basin on January 15th and 16th. Because the temperatures were too high past week, we lost two days of practice on the gates.

This past weekend, January 22nd, 23rd, J3's had Jr. Olympic Qualifier races at Jackson Hole. We were competing in two slaloms with seven competitors representing BBSRA; Allison Howe, Morgan Young, Piper Jackson-Sevy, Sean Griffard, John Hill, Matt Wyman and Erik Fitzpatrick. Conditions were extremely difficult; the course was very ice because of the rain few days earlier.

Morgan's 12th place was our best result on the women side and Sean's 17th place was the best result on the men's side. John, Matt and Piper, all skied better than at the beginning of the season and have improved their USSA points on the second race day.

Although we didn't get any top ten finishes, I can still say I am satisfied with our skiing. All racers had some good sections of the run, but to be more consistent we will need some additional practice on the course.

I plan to spend next weekend at the races in Sun Valley with J1 and J2 and the following one with J3's in Snow Basin. We hope to get some new good results there.

While the J3 team was in Jackson the J1-2 team competed in the Western Region Elite Series speed races in Big Sky, Montana. Justin Singer was the coach who accompanied Kate, Kristin, Emily, Will and Mike, through a tough week. The team came back black, blue and bronze. The black and blue came from the crashes and the bronze from Kate. Kate Stoddard finished 3rd in the first downhill but took a spill on day two that put her out for the rest of the series. Emily had some impressive results as well by cracking the top 25 twice starting near the back of the pack.

Kristin, Emily and Will each took tumbles thoughout the week. Mike was the only lucky one to come out of the week in one piece. "Speed races are tough. For most of our races this was there first real speed races. The kids learned a ton. Some very valuable lessons are tougher than others." Martin Wilson.

On a positive note each athlete is now healthy and ready to go. The J1-2 team will head to Sun Valley this weekend for Jr. Olympic Qualifiers. From there Kate will be heading to Nor-Am Cup races in Apex, B.C., while Brianna and Kristin will be competing in Jackson, Wy, in Western Region FIS races.

Stay tuned and pray for snow!
