Varsity Team Report
Report #4— February
22, 2005
Uros Pavlovcic
Last week, February 16-18, ten racers from the varsity
team competed in the super G races at Snowbird. The original plan was
to have one practice run and three races for everybody. Because of the
difficult conditions, bad weather, soft snow and large field sizes (about
130 male and 90 female athletes), female athletes competed in two Super
Gs and men only raced in one. It was a long three days for coaches and
athletes standing on the hill from 8 am until 4 pm and waiting for their
races. Luckily for many, Snowbird had a few feet of fresh powder and
many competitors used their extra time for powder skiing.
I was happy
to see many parents coming down to Snowbird to watch their kids racing.
Parent's play an important role and it is good for them
to check out what we are doing and how we are spending their money. It
was quite an intense experience for them watching their kids ski by 60
miles per hour and I could see they where the happiest people on the
hill when their kid safely made through the finish.
Not everything went smoothly for our team. We had two big crashes. First
was Morgan Young who crashed on Thursday a few gates before the finish
line. She was taken down by the sled but luckily nothing was broken.
The second big crash was on Friday by Will Stewart. We will never know
what happened since it was very foggy and he doesn't remember anything
about it. Shortly after Will crash man race was cancelled. Both, Morgan
and Will, are doing well and are back on snow ready for new challenges.
Our best results at Snowbird super Gs include Kate's 8 place, Emily's
15 and 20, Kristin's 12 and 25th place and Brianna's 19 place. I was
happy with everybody's effort at the race.
After we returned from Snowbird we had an opportunity to practice at
home ski resort. Conditions on the hill are great and I want to thank
Bogus Basin Ski Resort to provide training space for us.
